In August 1961, because of many achievements in training and building materials facilities as well as the needs of society, the Ministry of Education allowed Vinh University of Education to open three new majors: Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
At the beginning of the foundation year, the Department had only three lectures with 42 students; therefore, the Department had to invite lectures who were from Hanoi University of Education and Hanoi General University. At that time, training was a continuous process, from setting goals, content, curriculum, teaching methods, material facilities and teachers.
Implementing educational reform “Education goes one step ahead”, in 1976, the Department was assigned to train postgraduate. This was also the time the Department had many scientific research topics that related to agricultural production to serve the local.
From the academic year 1999-2000, the Department began to train bachelor of Biology Science (Full time - 4 years and Part time – 5 years). In addition, from the academic year 2006-2007, Ministry of Education and Training allowed Department to train bachelor of Environmental Science.
From 1993, Department of Biology started to train Master of Botany, Master of Zoology, Master of Teaching methods, Master of Experimental biology and PhD of Botany.
For nearly 50 years, Department of Biology has trained 2.509 students in Bachelor of Education, 244 students in Bachelor of Biology Science (Full time), 598 students in Bachelor of Biology Science (Part time), 607 aquaculture engineers, 146 Masters and four Doctors.
Nowadays, Department of Biology has 29 staffs including 27 lecturers (three Associate Professors, fifteen Doctors, nine Masters and two officials). Material facilities and laboratory equipment have been equipped quite modern and synchronous to meet the training and scientific research requirements.
With a maxim of teaching linked to scientific research, production and life, many lecturers chaired a variety of State level, ministerial level and scientific projects. Many national and regional conferences had been successfully organized at the Department. Recently, the Department of Biology is striving to accelerate biotechnology and experimental research to apply in production and life.
With many contributions in training and scientific research fields, the Department of Biology has been awarded the Certificate of Merit by the Ministry of Education and Training, Prime Minister and the State (The third Class Labor Medal)
